I just realized this post never went live so my apologies...
If you've been here before you know I've been trying to push myself outside my comfort zone for awhile now.
Today, thanks to my amazing friend Jenn Shurkus I have a really cool technique to share with you.
She sent me a Snapchat of a card she made with a beautiful alcohol ink background that had the most beautiful gold foil veins running through it. Immediately I was like I need to know how to make that.
AND then I couldn't stop.
Ultimately I made 5 backgrounds that turned into 9 cards.
I had to split the videos up into two different videos because the whole process from start (backgrounds) to finish (the last sequins on the cards) took me 3 days.

I honestly could not stop making them. I love the surprise of it!
You truly never know what you're going to get until you pull the foil sheet off.
It's fantastic!

Those backgrounds are gorgeous! I love playing with alcohol inks, too, and it is hard to stop! I have a bunch of backgrounds made, I just can't bring myself to cut them up and use them on cards.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful stuff. Thanks for passing on the idea. BTW--you don't have to have YUPO paper. I've done alcohol ink backgrounds on glossy cardstock and it works just fine.

ReplyDeleteLove this foiling technique. I've been playing alcohol inks on Yupo lately (thank you Jennifer McGuire), and I've made some backgrounds, but I haven't figured out what to do with them. I'm going to try some more and use the foiling. You've given me some great ideas!

Fantastic cards Kelly and just love these backgrounds. Have been doing alcohol backgrounds for years but have never tried with the foil, so missed out. now to get it all together, I have all the foils like you I have all the stuff now to use it. Again thanks so much for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI've been doing AI on yupo for years now, but have never seen the gold veining before, love it! You can use these backgrounds for other things too. My favorite is cutting out the shape of a pendant tray and putting it in that with a glass cabochon on top. Sunandmoonkits is one of the places that sells them. Another fast idea is buying empty black photo frame cards that you can just slip in one of your AI creations for a card.
ReplyDeleteOh, my. I stopped using alcohol inks because of the stickiness that remained on my cardstock. Now, I am ready to give them another whirl. Who would have thought that the stickiness I hated could end up being an asset? TFS.

ReplyDeleteJust fyi, Yupo is a plastic paper, different than glossy cardstock. You can use glossy cardstock for alcohol inks, but the inks don't move as well as on Yupo.
Just so you know: I would gladly spend an hour watching one of your videos, and using backgrounds like this is now definitely in your wheelhouse!!!! Now, I am off to play with my alcohol inks and foil!!!
