Hello Crafters!
I have a new Coloring in Dimensions with Kelly video up over at the Waffle Flower Blog. You know me I'm a fan of sharing at both places!
This card was A LOT different for me but it's because of how I went about doing it. Originaly I had planned some soft no line watercoloring. However, I was struggling to come up with a design. Often I will check out color combinations until I find one that inspires me and then let my design go from there.
Except I couldn't pick one of those either. I decided to call in the reinforcements. I took to Instagram and shared three color palettes. Then you all voted on which one I should use.
Number 2 below, was the winner. I have an entire board devoted to color combinations if you're ever at a loss. You can check it out here.
As I'm sure you've already realized this is way outside my comfort zone. But I'm always up for challenge and I'm really glad I did it.
I had to scrimp, scrounge, mix and search to find colors that matched the photo lol It all worked out mostly because I own so many coloring mediums.
I created the dark teal background by mixing two distress ink colors, chipped sapphire and pine needles. I love oxides as much as the next guy but original distress inks are where it's at for creating custom colors. I tried a few different types of spatters before going with the gold perfect pearls which worked beautifully.
I stamped the bouquet on a separate piece of white cardstock and got busy with my copic markers. The darkest shading for the orange flowers are actually brown. I know sounds crazy but they are very far into the reddish brown family and worked perfect. I only knew that from mixing and experimenting with my colors.
Once the image was all colored I traced the outside edge with a navy first and then a pine green second. This technique is called glazing and it's the copic version of custom colors. :)
After that was done I die cut this bad boy!
In the close up you can see how well the background matches the outline! I was so happy it worked. sqeee!
I heat embossed my sentiment in gold on some black cardstock to separate it from the dark teal.
You can watch the entire process in the video below
even though I'm still desperately clinging to summer I'm glad I took the jump into fall colors. this card really made me think out of the box and I know i'm only better for it!
Thanks for stopping by!
I have so much coming up for you guys!!

ReplyDeleteVery pretty indeed. Love that you stepped out of your comfort zone with colours & got some perfect pearls in some where x
ReplyDeleteI had to come here from IG and see how you colored those gorgeous flowers on that beautiful background! I am blown away by this! Coloring the white outline of the die cut makes ALL the difference. I will be checking out your color board for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic card. I am glad that you stepped out of your comfort zone because you did a great job. Love the coloring on the flowers and you are right, the outlining adds so much.
ReplyDeleteWow, Kelly! This card is stunning. Watching your video, I was fascinated with your color blending/glazing to achieve your teal-like colors. Will definitely be trying this. Thanks for sharing both the card and the video (color combos, too!).
