Creating Snowy Scenes + 30% Off Sale

Mine was a bit easier than usual because I had a few extra hours off work. I caught up on the sleeps and it was glorious!

Now onto how to create a snowy scene!

I stamped my images in copic safe ink and created masks for them. We don't needthe masks for the stamping but we do need them for the ink blending. I drew to hill shapes on my masking paper and trimmed them out with my scissors. Don't stress over this! A general hill shape will do! Mine's pretty steep so that it would makes sense to have my pup sliding down. 

I placed all my masks on my images and added the steep hill mask. I also like to mask the bottom of my card just so I don't get any stray ink anywhere. I chose to do a warmer sky because I knew my card was going to be mostly white. I wanted to add some interest with the colors in the background. Once my sky was done I removed the steep hill mask 

I placed the smaller hill mask down and added shading to the very top of the mask and along the left hand side about 2 inches up. This is creating the shadows for the steep hill as well as the highlight for my smaller hill. I removed the smaller hill mask and re-positioned it to the right to create an even smaller partial hill. This just helps break up the scene so it's not stark white. A little extra ink blending at the bottom of the card really brings everything together. 

I removed all the masks and used copic markers to color my images. I chose brighter shades of the pink and orange from the sky. Throwing in a bit of blue, orange's complimentary color, breaks up the color scheme and helps it look my striking. Once the copic coloring was done it was time for the "flying snow" to come to life. 

In order to create the flying snow look you just need white acrylic paint and a stiff bristled paint brush. I started by sqyeezing a small amount of white paint onto an acrylic block. I picked some up with my paint brush and dabbed some off. I didn't want big blobs of paint. From there I dabbed the paint directly over my pup's tushy and around the ground/sky area surrounding him. You can add in a bit of water to change the opacity if full strength paint is more coverage than you want. 

For the next step I did add a spray of water to make it easier to spatter. Using the side of the acrylic block I flicked paint off my paintbrush onto my project so it would appear as if it were lightly snowing. Love the look but don't have acrylic paint?   You can also use white gouache or watercolor grounds.
